"That's been an interesting phenomenon," says Alex Mayberry in the early morning, prior to the release of Diablo's transformational expansion, Reaper of Souls. I question him on what it's been like to see Diablo become so closely associated with a feeling frustration. "I do not know if this is overemphasized. Who are we as a vocal minority and what is that number? Even if it's just one percent, or two percent, it's many people."
Two percent of unhappy Diablo owners is 280.000 people. That's a lot of angry comments. "It's been difficult to separate all the voices in that raucous cacophony" Mayberry adds.
Reaper of Souls launches tomorrow with new loot-dropping methods, a new Crusader model, a new level 70 cap, the addition of an Adventure Mode, and the elimination of popular Auction House. The majority of the changes to its mechanics were incorporated into the vanilla game in patch 2.0.1. However, the overall message is that players will receive more diverse loot more often. The overall reaction has been optimistic. "It's nice to now have people reacting to new changes" Mayberry says, "and I think the changes are great."
"We are confident that we're in a favorable position as we're able to play constantly," he added. "There's plenty of excitement that we're waiting to see what players are going to say. "Leading the charge for Reaper of Souls is Josh Mosqueira who was named the role of game director on June 2013. Mayberry spoke about the impact some of his decisions have been affecting the game.
