It is a move which may upset a few players - specifically those who have obtained free kicks down to a fine art - but it is an element of this game that is badly needed an overhaul for a couple of years now. Well, it kind of does, and it is called Volta. Sort of a big mesh of indoor mode, FIFA road (recall that?!) And The Journey, Volta consists of a few different modes and hugely aids the overall replayability of this game. The thrust here is brief, small, games which emphasize close control and flair in arenas that are tight. 3v3s and 4v4s filled with clever flicks and passes that rally off graffitied walls, all into some banging soundtrack with really distinctive-looking players.

The story style element of it's a small drag though. Far shorter compared to Journey it's replacing, it is largely only jelqing cutscenes and match situations you almost feel as though you're not permitted to use. Upgrades for this could be welcome, although a remaking of Nike's famous Scorpion advertisement would certainly be a license to print money.For so long, so so so so long, Career Mode was little but an afterthought for installments of FIFA. Replaced as a novelty by internet gambling a decade ago, and more recently by Ultimate Team and The Journey for a development priority, FIFA 23 sees for slightly more love. Not a whole lot, but sufficient.

Specifically, the idea of Team Morale now comes into play, where matches, results, and period goals will affect the happiness of the players. Most interestingly, however cheap FUT 23 coins, you will finally have questions put to you by the press before and after matches, and how you conduct yourself will impact the morale of specific players in addition to the squad as a whole.
