The news comes just as the latest Activision-Blizzard WOTLK Gold earnings report reveals Blizzard's number of active monthly players has significantly decreased compared to the same time in the year before. Despite the lower number of players, revenue for Blizzard increased by 7% over the course of the year partly due to player "participation in value added services," i.e. microtransactions.

The announcement of Burning Crusade Classic's launch date was supposed to be a cause for celebration and excitement in the game's community however the news that was released has several players worried about what new changes and microtransactions Blizzard will add next.

World of Warcraft Rogue Breakdown and Open World Features Despite the drop in players Blizzard's financial results proved to be strong. Revenues grew by 7 percent year-over year, thanks primarily to World of Warcraft and specifically WoW's Shadowlands expansion.

" World of Warcraft saw an impressive reach, engagement and participation in value-added services, as well as significant numbers of players who joined to the game for the very first time boosted by initiatives to enhance the onboarding experience," Activision Blizzard said.

Activision Blizzard defines monthly active users as the total number of players in the game they chose to play in a specific month. The amount is calculated when you add the number of monthly active users for all months, after which it is divided by three."For Blizzard, an individual who is logged into the same game on two different platforms or devices during the same timeframe would normally be counted as one user." Activision Blizzard said.

This is not the case in Activision and King. Due to "technical limitations" players who play the identical game on two different platforms or devices is considered to be two players. Activision Blizzard also cautioned that some of its information comes from third-party companies.

Although Blizzard's overall number of players is likely to be lower year-over-year however, it's not really unexpected. Q1 2020 marked the beginning of the pandemic, and brought about a rise in people playing games and a comparison with the same quarter is bound be difficult to compare. Blizzard appears to be poised for some growth in the coming years, as they are releasing World of Warcraft: Resurrected and WoW: Classic - The Burning Crusade this year.
