The irony is that Blizzard's insistence on D2R Items maintaining the authentic Diablo 2 experience in the remake is at the root of all these headaches. One "legacy service" in particular handles critical functions including "game creation/joining, updating/reading/filtering game lists, verifying game server health, and reading characters from the database."

It was upgraded and optimized to work with Diablo 2: Resurrected but is still built on 20 years old technology and has problems being up-to date "modern game play."

"In 2001, there wasn't nearly as much content available on the internet around what it takes to play Diablo 2 'correctly' (Baal can be played for XP as well as Pindleskin/Ancient Swers/etc to magic find, etc)," PezRadar said. "Today it is, however, that a new player can look up many amazing content creators who can teach players ways to use the game various ways.

Many of them including lots of database load that is creating, loading, and destroying games in quick succession. Though we did foresee this--with players making fresh characters on fresh servers, struggling to obtain their items of magic to find--we greatly underestimated the extent of what we learned from our beta testing."

Another problem is the number of database saves across the world, that are occurring way frequently without any good reason. Blizzard has made some changes to help smooth things out at the moment and is looking to implement a permanent fix, but it'll be long in coming as it's "an structure overhaul that will take time to buy diablo II resurrected items design, test, then implement."
