MIAMI -- Alexi Amarista was glad to get an opportunity to play on his birthday, even if he had to wait six innings. Amarista celebrated his 25th birthday by delivering a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday. "I was happy," Amarista said. "Instead of me getting gifts from my teammates, I gave a gift to the team. After all that we went through this series, to get a W the way we did and come through on my birthday is something Im not going to forget." Will Venable and Tommy Medica singled with one out in the seventh. Nathan Eovaldi was able to get Yasmani Grandal to ground out before Amarista came to plate. Batting for pitcher Ian Kennedy, Amarista drove the ball over the right-field wall on the ninth pitch of the at-bat for a 3-1 lead. "Hes a little guy, but hes got a little sock on the pull side," Padres manager Bud Black said. Amarista, a centre fielder, was held out of the starting lineup, but came through when he got his chance. "Some guys were giving me a hard time, you always play a guy on his birthday," Black said. "We didnt start him, but he sort of showed me I guess." Kennedy (1-1) was sharp, using his fastball and curveball as he allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He struck out five before exiting in favour of Amarista. "Its a good birthday gift for him," Kennedy said. "If he does that every single time, thats pretty awesome." Four relievers then helped the Padres end a four-game losing streak, including two against the Marlins to begin the series. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his second save. "No doubt it was a good win. You hate to leave on a loss, especially a sweep," Black said. Eovaldi (1-1) held the Padres scoreless through six. Eovaldi struck out eight, which tied a career high. "I definitely didnt see that coming," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Eovaldi pitched a great game and deserved better than that, but sometimes thats the way it goes." The Marlins completed their opening homestand with a 5-2 record. "The goal is to try to win every series and we were able to do that," Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee said. "We had a chance to go for a sweep today. We had our chances, but now we have to go on the road and try to keep the momentum going." Miami got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with Jeff Bakers pinch-hit RBI double. San Diegos Yonder Alonso had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to extend the lead to 4-2. It was the first time this season San Diego had scored at least four runs in a game. "No doubt weve got to get the bats going," Black said. "Ive said that repeatedly over the last three to four days. You look at some of those averages and theyre obviously a little low. We need those guys to start getting some hits." Giancarlo Stanton pushed his RBI total to 12 in the fourth with a base hit to drive in Christian Yelich, who tripled to lead off the inning. Stanton already has a career-high RBI total for April. NOTES: Stanton posted nine RBIs in April in each of the last three years. ... It was the first career pinch-hit home run for Amarista. ... Miami begins a three-game series at Washington on Tuesday, with RHP Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 9.00) facing LHP Gio Gonzalez (1-0, 1.50). . Cheap C.J. Beathard Jersey .Y. -- The Buffalo Bills will head into the regular season short on experience at quarterback after trimming the roster on Friday.GLENEAGLES, Scotland - Phil Mickelson poked fun at Rory McIlroy. Now they get to face off in the Ryder Cup.Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, undefeated as a team two years ago at Medinah, face the European powerhouse of McIlroy and Sergio Garcia in the opening session of fourballs on Friday at Gleneagles. Were looking to hand them their first defeat tomorrow morning, McIlroy said. They will be the anchor match of what should be a fascinating opening session.U.S. captain Tom Watson made sure all three of his rookies were on the course at Gleneagles right away, and two of them are partners — 21-year-old Jordan Spieth and 24-year-old Patrick Reed, the youngest pairing in Ryder Cup history.Europe captain Paul McGinley put together four pairings who have never played together in a Ryder Cup. That includes McIlroy and Garcia, who he said have become fast friends over the summer and asked to play together. The fun is only starting now, McGinley said.Mickelson took a playful jab at McIlroy on Wednesday when he said the best part of American unity is the players dont litigate against each other. McIlroy has a court battle against his former management company, and the lawsuit involves Graeme McDowell.McIlroy told Golf Channel on Thursday that he got a couple of jabs back at the gala dinner on Wednesday.I know Phil well and we had a couple of laughs about it, McIlroy said.Mickelson and Bradley went 2-1-1 as partners in the Presidents Cup last year, so they are not unbeatable. And while they faced some of Europes strongest tandems at Medinah — including handing Garcia and Luke Donald their first loss in foursomes — this might be the toughest yet.Its going to be a difficult match against what we perceive as the strongest team that Europe has, Mickelson said.Watson went with his strength at the top. He chose Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson in the opening match against Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. Watson and Simpson won both fourballs matches at Medinah, beating both opponents on the 14th hole.Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker will play the second match against Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjorn, the 43-year-old Dane who is playing in the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2002.Spieth and Reed will facce Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher in what might be the most compelling match of the morning.dddddddddddd.I told them today, Im going to throw you in the ocean without a life preserver. Youre on your own. You get out there and you get it done, Watson said.Poulter is the most dynamic Ryder Cup player for Europe, a winner of seven straight matches and coming off a 4-0 record at Medinah. His rookie partner makes the team even more daunting. Gallacher, the only Scottish player at Gleneagles, lives about 35 miles (55 kilometres) away. He received the loudest cheer during the opening ceremony.Absolutely buzzing, Poulter said. Playing with Stevie G, home course, in Scotland, first Ryder Cup. Its going to be amazing. I cant wait to smash it down the middle.Spieth and Reed sounded up for the challenge.I dont think you could have picked out two people that we want to play against more, Spieth said. I feel like our job is to win a point. We can do that with those two guys. Were going to really lower their team morale, I feel like.McGinley sat out two of his rookies — Victor Dubuisson of France and Jamie Donaldson of Wales. Also sitting out are Lee Westwood, who has been in every Ryder Cup since 1997, and McDowell.Watson is sitting out Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar, who are Nos. 4 and 9 in the world. Furyk, however, is 1W-8L-1D in fourballs, with his only victory in 2006 with Tiger Woods as his partner. Also sitting are Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson, both extremely accurate and perhaps better suited for foursomes in the afternoon. Both captains said their plan was for all 12 players to be on the course by the end of Friday.People are going to say there is real strength at the top, real strength at the bottom, McGinley said. Its really strength all over. I really, really rate this American team. Were going to have to be on if were going to beat them. The Americans have not trailed after the opening session since 2006, though Bubba Watson was not sure a lead was critical — not after what happened at Medinah two years ago when Europe staged the greatest comeback away from home.We saw in 2012 that obviously a hot start is not the key, the Masters champ said. Its about finishing.
